FIRST WORKPLACE MANSLAUGHTER CONVICTION: LARGE FINE FOR BUSINESS

An ill-judged decision that caused the death of a young employee has resulted a small business with a $1.3m fine. A court found that the sole director must pay $120,000 compensation to the family and complete two years’ unpaid community work. Members will have received a WHS alert regarding this topic.

LIMITATIONS ON USING FIXED TERM CONTRACTS

From 6 December 2023, there are rules (called limitations) about using fixed term contracts; also employers must give employees they are engaging on a new fixed term contract a Fixed Term Contract Information Statement (FTCIS).
